September 18 - Got invasive plants? Get your questions answered at our September 18th program at Blandy!  Steve Young is an environmental professional who also volunteers for Arlington’s Remove Invasive Plants (RiP) program as an invasive plants "whacker." He has worked hundreds of hours managing non-native, invasive plants especially at Long Branch Nature Center near his home in Arlington, VA. He first began to attack invasive plants in the park in roughly 1992. His work has been recognized -- he was a 2005 Arlington Outstanding Volunteer, and in 2009 he received a Virginia Master Naturalists "Armed and Dangerous" invasives volunteer award. Steve also is treasurer of the Mid-Atlantic Exotic Pest Plant Council and a member of the Virginia Native Plant Society. He blogs about his work at plantwhacker.blogspot.com.

The October 16 program will feature Queen of Boxwood Joan Butler. Joan is a life member of the Board of Directors of the American Boxwood Society. She had a boxwood nursery with her husband Scot in Lovettsville for many years and has a broad range of information on how to grow beautiful boxwood. Since Blandy houses the world’s most extensive boxwood collection, Joan will have live examples of best varieties to show us. Don’t miss this very special presentation with a living legend.

On November 20, horticulture celebrity Brent Heath of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs of Gloucester, Virginia will speak to us at Blandy Library. After three generations of daffodil and bulb growing as a family business, Brent is an amazing resource of information. He will inform, delight, and amuse our members. Bring all your questions about bulbs – Brent is the answer man!
